I am studying Masters of Applied Sciences (Aquaculture) at the Australian Maritime College
Where are you from?
I'm from Portugal.
Why did you choose Launceston?
I chose Launceston because of the Australian Maritime College, which is one of the best teaching facilities in my area (aquaculture, and more specifically aquatic animal health) worldwide.
Where do you live?
I live in a shared house, with an Australian girl that owns the house and is my friend and a cat and a dog.
Where do you hang out?
I like to go to the Saloon Bar, because all the students go there and it’s great to be with friends. Irish Murphys is good as well. I also like the events that are arranged on campus such as the multicultural night and trivia nights.
Where do you love to eat?
I like to eat at local restaurants such as Mud, Star Bar and the Metz. But the perfect place to eat in Launceston is Cataract Gorge, enjoying a picnic with a beautiful view, close to nature and after a wonderful walk.
What do you like to do in Launceston?
I like to go out with friends and Launceston is so nice because we don´t need to go too far to have a great view or to do a nice activity. The Gorge is the place I choose to walk, but walking in the city is also very good.
What do you know now that you didn’t know before you arrived?
That despite being small, Launceston is a great place to live and local people are simply great!
Where is your future headed?
I want to keep studying in my area, doing a PhD. If I have the opportunity to stay here it will be my first choice.
If you had to sell Launceston with a slogan, what would it be?
Have fun in Launceston!
Describe Launceston in three words
Wild, beautiful and romantic.
What are the sounds of Launceston?
For me the most typical sounds of Launceston are the birds. The plovers, magpies and the crazy galahs! I love it!
If your last day on earth were to be spent in Launceston, what would you do?
If was on the Sunday I would go to the Esk Market, buy some nice food, then to the Gorge to have a nice picnic with friends and go for a walk.
How has Launceston changed your life?
I thought that I would never feel at home in another place, but in Launceston, despite being on the other side of the world, I feel at home.
