Students studying at the University of Tasmania in Launceston have access to affordable and modern on-campus accommodation to help them achieve academically and make lasting friendships. The University places emphasis on fostering safe and supportive residential student communities. Over 1,000 students live on campus and pay up to 20% less than they would for similar accommodation on ‘mainland Australia’. The University of Tasmania offers five halls of residence – all within 10 minutes of major shopping centres.



Newnham Apartments

A total of 180 studio apartments were constructed on the Newnham campus and completed in 2014 as part of the National Rental Affordability Scheme. Each self-contained single occupancy studio apartments has its own kitchen and bathroom. Residents have access to a range of services including laundry, social spaces, common rooms, discounted meals at Saltz Cafe Restaurant, and resident-only computer labs.

Inveresk apartments

The University’s National Rental Affordability Scheme apartments at Inveresk are located on the banks of the North Esk River beside the Inveresk campus. The development consists of 120 apartments and several common areas across two three-storey buildings. Completed in February 2016, the environmentally-conscious building was designed by local firms Morrison and Breytenbach and Circa Morris-Nunn Architects, with technical expertise from the University’s Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood and the team’s structural engineers.



Launceston Church Grammar School and Scotch Oakburn College boarding facilities in fully supervised and ‘homely’ environments. They provide resident tutors to support students and chefs that cater for a diverse range of dietary needs and tastes.



Many students live off-campus. They might home stay and become a part of a Tasmanian family – where they can learn about the local culture, build their English language skills and form lasting relationships.



Others will join their friends to live in a house where they can share the rent, have their own vegetable and herb garden and self-cater.
