WORK

EARNING MONEY IN LAUNCESTON IS NOT SO HARD. WITH OVER HALF A MILLION VISITORS A YEAR, THERE ARE MANY JOBS IN HOSPITALITY, TOURISM AND RETAIL.

Launceston is located in the heart of Northern Tasmania’s major agricultural region. There are thousands of casual seasonable employment opportunities associated with the vegetable, grape, apple and berry industries – either in fruit or vegetable picking, packing and retail sales – or in pruning orchards.

Many Tasmanian businesses export products all over the world and are keen to attract international students to work in their organisations. They want to learn about the cultures of their key offshore markets and help their Tasmania staff learn about the countries to which to send products and services.

As Tasmania’s export industries grow and international tourism increases, more ‘local’ businesses want international staff in their work places.

What are the workplaces like?

Many Tasmanian workplaces seem quite casual to international students. In most cases, employees call their superiors and colleagues by the first names and work in an environment where communication is open. Managers enjoy learning from their employees and will seek opinions and ideas regarding innovative processes and improvements.

While the ‘boss’ is always the boss, the staff and management may often socialise and there is a strong emphasis on making staff feel welcome, supported and accepted.
